Growing Up Healthy: How We Build Lifelong Habits at The Clay House

If you’ve ever tried to convince a four-year-old that broccoli is better for them than a cookie, you know that teaching kids about health takes more than just telling them what to do.

At The Clay House, we look at things a little differently. Instead of just teaching our little Ones, we roll up our sleeves and make healthy living an adventure. Through messy art, silly rhymes, and hands-on kitchen experiments and flameless cooking activities, we help our little ones build habits that stick with them long after they leave our classrooms.

Plates Full of Rainbows: Nutrition the Fun Way

Eating well shouldn’t feel like a chore. In our classrooms, we talk about food as fuel for running, jumping, and playing. We use storytelling and role-play to show kids why our bodies love fruits and vegetables.

One of our favourite classroom days? Fireless cooking.

When kids get to chop soft bananas with butter knives, layer yogurt into parfaits, or assemble their own veggie faces on a whole-grain cracker, magic happens. They aren’t just eating a snack—they are taking pride in making a healthy choice, and they are far more likely to eat it when they’ve crafted it themselves!

Sparking Active Days and Screen-Free Fun

Let’s be honest: keeping kids away from screens in today’s digital world is tough. But when outdoor play looks like riding bikes, splashing in puddles, or chasing each other across the playground, kids naturally forget about tablets.

We encourage families to lean into that active energy at home, too:

• Swap the snacks: Pack crunchy apple slices, handfuls of berries, or yogurt tubes instead of processed treats.

• Prioritise staying hydrated: Keep a colourful water bottle handy so staying hydrated becomes second nature.

• Protect the bedtime routine: A cranky toddler is usually an overtired toddler. Establishing a cozy, predictable wind-down routine helps little bodies get the deep sleep they need to grow.

Scrub-a-Dub and Sparkling Smiles

Good hygiene can be a tough sell when there’s a puddle waiting to be jumped in. That’s why we turn personal care into a game.

From interactive hand-washing demos to dental care workshops where our School Nurse teaches proper brushing techniques, our kids learn that keeping clean feels great. Brushing twice a day, washing up before meals, and splashing through a regular bath become part of their daily rhythm—not a battle of wills at bedtime.

Partnering With Parents at Home

We can do a lot during the school day, but raising healthy, happy kids is a team sport.

When kindergarteners hear the same message at school and at the dinner table, it clicks. By modeling good habits together, choosing nutritious foods, moving our bodies, and winding down early, we give our children the best possible foundation for life.

After all, healthy kids grow into healthy, unstoppable adults!
